In 1939 James MacGibbon joined the Royal Fusiliers and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Even though he was openly a communist he was posted to the Intelligence Corps where his fluency in German was particularly useful. James was infuriated that, among other information, knowledge of German troop dispositions was not being passed on to Russia, Britain’s ally at the time.
