History Talk & Tea - The Rufford Poachers Scandal

One moonlit night in 1851, a gang of some 40 poachers - mostly poor Mansfield men - assembled in Rufford Abbey park to strike a blow against the monopoly of game hunting rights by wealthy landowners. While working class men struggled for a living, Lord Savile of Rufford Abbey jealously protected the game on his huge estate. Not even allowed a rabbit for the pot, a gang of discontented locals set nets and armed themselves with stones. But Lord Savile's gamekeepers were ready and lay in w
