Haydn Nelson Mass, Little Organ Mass and Excerpts from the Musical Clock, Cheltenham Choral Society

Haydn composed the ‘Nelson Mass’ in 1778 at a time of war and political uncertainty in Europe. Nelson had just defeated Napoleon at Abukir Bay when it was first performed.
The work has several titles, one of them the ‘Missa in Angustiis’ (mass in a time of tribulation). It became known as the Nelson mass only later, possibly after Lord Nelson visited Haydn in Austria where he may have attended a performance.
