Historical understanding of early towns has been transformed in recent years. In the old view towns, were separate from mainstream society. In this outmoded interpretation they were alien, and they undermined the rural and aristocratic social order. Now we see that kings and lords founded and encouraged towns because they valued them and expected to gain profit and status from them.
