May 2017: Ian Beckett’s ‘Dad’s Armies, the Amateur Military Tradition 1558 - 1945’. Wednesday 17th May. Close attention is given to the development of forces such as the militia, yeomanry, volunteers, territorials and home guard and the continuity between these forces indicating the important role they played in local society. The talk will highlight not only their military purpose, but also their function as tools of social control and law-keeping.
