Entitled ‘From Light to Darkness’, the music for this concert takes us through the passage of a day, from dawn to dusk. We start with the plainsong antiphon O Oriens (O Morning Star), moving seamlessly into a piece based on O Oriens by Cecilia McDowall, which leads into James Macmillan's O Radiant Dawn. This is followed by music by Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Stanford and Elgar illustrating the coming morning. The second half of the concert contemplates the calm and peace of the evening, starting with Balfour Gardiner's Evening Hymn. The first performance of an evocative piece, Still Evening specially written for the choir by Richard White and also using flute, cello and piano, follows. Other music includes The long day closes by Sullivan, Calme des nuits by Saint-Saens and pieces by Bob Chilcott and Karl Jenkins.
