Battersea Choral Society presents Purcell's Dido and Aeneas
Dido and Aeneas was first performed in 1689 at a girls boarding school in Chelsea. The story is based on Book IV of Virgils Aeneid. It recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero, Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her.
Welcome to all the Pleasures was commissioned by the Musical Society of London in 1683. They organised a festival for the great patroness of music, and in honour of the celebration of the feast of St Cecilia, for which Purcell had written the Ode.
