Talk - Death, Debt and Discrimination: crime in Victorian Newbury

Ros Clow leads the History Group of the Friends of Newtown Road Cemetery. While researching people buried there, through inquest and court reports in local and national newspapers, Ros has discovered many crimes committed locally.

This talk, to tie in with the museum’s Crime and Punishment exhibition, will cover a range of crimes from the second half of the 19th century: from baby farming to bankruptcy; manslaughter to a suspicious accidental death. The punishments reflect the values of the t
