Guided tour of Clare Castle and Clare Castle Country Park
Visit the remains of the Norman castle of the de Clare family. An 11th-century earth & timber castle, Clare was chosen as the seat of the many Suffolk estates given to Richard de Bienfaite, his reward for supporting William the Conqueror. Its 62-foot motte is the highest in Suffolk. The stone keep, now a ruin, was built in the 13th century. There were inner & outer baileys, the latter still mostly intact.
