WEA Adult Education Course - During the 20th century, American art developed a powerful global presence, exemplified by two innovative and yet very different artists: Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe. Hopper's paintings have been described as studies in urban isolation and uncertainty - taut, lonely and controlled. However, because he did capture those urban moods so brilliantly, many of his images, such as Nighthawks and House by the Railroad, have become international icons.
