St Michael, Barton - Church Heritage
Heritage Open Day: St. Michael's is a Grade 1 listed church and is the only medieval church in Cumbria with a central Norman tower. The church was built in the mid 12th century and comprised a chancel and knave joined by its central tower having narrow arches. The North and South aisles were added in the 13th and 14th centuries when the chancel was also extended and the lower parts of the original arches were widened to give a unique and striking double arch feature.
