St. Modwen's Church

Heritage Open Day: The present building was constructed between 1719 and 1726 on the site of a Benedictine Abbey Church that had fallen into disrepair. The architect, William Smith, designed the building so that the entire congregation could see and hear the minister, as the style of worship at the time was centred on preaching. The church is remarkable for the preservation of its Georgian woodwork, with original box pews, galleries and fine sweeping staircases in the two side porches. The tower
