Merrist Wood House
Heritage Open Day: In 1875 Charles Peyto Shrubb inherited the estate of Merrist Wood and the nearby farm. The house named after the local woodlands was designed by the famous architect Richard Norman Shaw in 1877. The original building was modified in 1918, the central courtyard covered in and a grand staircase inserted. The Surrey Farm Institute was formed in 1945 offering courses in agriculture and horticulture and in the 1960s it was renamed as Merrist Wood Agricultural College. Chimney stack
