St Nicholas Church, Compton
Heritage Open Day: Grade I listed building. Recorded in the Doomsday Book, the site of St Nicholas Church pre dates Saxon times. Norman pillars and arches are beautifully carved in local chalk from the Hog’s Back. Pilgrims passed through Compton on their way to Canterbury. The figure of a knight is scratched on the chancel arch. A window to an early anchorite cell was discovered in the north wall of the chancel.
