The Battling Baroness of Ashtead
Heritage Open Day: The baroness deT'Serclaes M.M., born Elsie Shapter, was a resident of Ashtead for nearly fifty years until her death in 1978. Already an early pioneer of motorcycling she became nationally and internationally famous during the First World War for her extraordinary courage in running an independent first-aid unit on the front line near Ypres. She married a Belgian aristocrat and carried her title with pride for the rest of her life. Richard Hughes, former Head of History
