Dunston Staiths
Heritage Open Day: Dunston Staiths on the River Tyne is believed to be the largest timber structure in Europe. At its height, 5.5m tonnes of coal a year was taken by rail from the Durham coalfields and loaded from the Staiths onto waiting ships on the river. Since its closure, it has fallen into decline, but now with the help of Heritage Lottery funding, TWBPT plans to make it into a sustainable visitor attraction.
On Saturday there will be a food market on the Staiths from 11.00-15.00
