St James' Church and Graveyard, Benwell
Heritage Open Day: St James' Church is one of the oldest buildings in Benwell. It was originally designed by John Dobson. The Church opened in 1833 when Benwell was home to some of the richest and most powerful families in Newcastle. Many notable people are buried in the graveyard including Richard Grainger, John Buddle, William Cookson, John Sowerby and William Cochran Carr. Special features in the church include a unique wooden ceiling, an engraving by Eric Gill, carvings by Ralph Hedley
