Edward Jenner and John Hunter: The Apprentice and his Sorcerer
A talk by Professor Gareth Williams, author of 'Angel of Death: the Story of Smallpox':
In 1770, the 21-year-old Edward Jenner went to London to complete his medical training under John Hunter, the anatomist and resurrectionist who would later be recognised as the ‘father of experimental surgery’. Jenner fell under the spell of the charismatic surgeon extraordinary to King George III, while Hunter was captivated by the potential of the young man who quickly became his star pupil.
