Handel's oratorio tells the story of the Plagues of Egypt and the Exodus. Unlike most oratorios the plot is not driven by individual passions and actions but presents and celebrates the story of the people of Israel. The chorus, unusually, is the protagonist, driving the story forwards, with fully three quarters of the work consisting of choral movements – some for double chorus.
