Made in Dagenham - The Musical - presented by THE HARROGATE PHOENIX PLAYERS
Based on a true story, and told with great music, humour and affection, ‘Made in Dagenham’ explores the movement that resulted in a significant reform to the employment laws. Rita O'Grady leads the 1968 Ford sewing machinists’ strike at the Ford Dagenham plant, where female workers walk out in protest against sexual discrimination, demanding equal pay for their skilled work.
Although the Prime Minister of the day, Harold Wilson, is reputed to have said ‘no Labour Government is going to be pushed around by a lot of women with dyed hair’, it was the intervention of Barbara Castle, his recently appointed Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity, that helped the women make history.
