Prisons have always been important institutions in London, and their records are one of the richest for genealogy and family research. Colin Oakes looks at the large numbers of prisons that have existed in London from medieval times to the present and their myriad forms. He'll begin by tracing how they slowly became a place of punishment, both Corporal and Capital in form, before moving on to the painful conditions in which men and women were kept and how the 'press' was utilis
