Durham Singers: Songs of Farewell
D. Scarlatti: Stabat Mater
Parry: Songs of Farewell (My soul, there is a country; I know my soul hath power; Never weather-beaten sail; There is an old belief; At the round earth’s imagined corners; Lord, let me know mine end).
In their Passiontide concert, the Durham Singers explore how composers from two very different worlds use the power of music to help us contemplate the end of life and whatever may lie beyond. Deeply expressive settings of Roman Catholic Latin texts by Italian baroque composers Scarlatti and Lotti contrast with Parry's very personal response to his own mortality and to the First World War. The six Songs of Farewell, set to poems by great English writers are a world away from the grand ceremonial music with which Parry is usually associated.
