The Passing of the Year - an evening of poetic music!
Our programme comprises modern choral settings of fine poetry, complemented by flute solos - including Debussy’s haunting Syrinx - played by our guest soloist Cherry Blanchard. Highlights of the programme include:
Malcolm Archer ~ Hymn for St Cecilia
Alexander L’Estrange ~ Three songs of love
Randall Thompson ~ The road not taken
Morten Lauridsen ~ Sure on this shining night
The main piece of the evening is Jonathan Dove’s The passing of the year. Setting words by William Blake, Emily Dickinson and Alfred, Lord Tennyson amongst others, this is a song-cycle exploring the theme of the passing seasons. Written for double choir and piano, the music demands extreme virtuosity from the singers and pianist alike; we are therefore delighted to be accompanied, as always, by the brilliant Charlie Penn. This work is an incredible modern masterpiece which should not be missed!
