Shropshire Turnpike Roads and Milestones.

An illustrated talk by Alan Reade hosted by Wem Civic Society.
From the 1760s Acts were passed requiring trusts to erect milestones indicating the distance between the main towns on the turnpikes. These were mostly made of stone with the details chipped in. Occasionally milestones were made of iron and had odd shapes, for example Thomas Telford designed his own milestones for the London-Holyhead road with a triangular head and chamfered sides. At the peak of Turnpike roads, over 1,000 trusts a
