Handel: Judas Maccabaeus

Handel's three-part oratorio Judas Maccabaeus was planned as a compliment to the victorious Prince William, Duke of Cumberland after his victory over Charles Edward Stuart the Pretender at the battle of Culloden in 1746. It tells the tale of the Israelites’ resistance of their Syrian conquerors in the second century BC, and it was an immediate success with the public.
