Constance Villiers Stuart in India: From Beachamwell to Bharatpur

Beachamwell Hall was the home of Constance Villiers Stuart for most of her long life. She died there in 1966 aged 89. However for three years before the First World War she lived in India when her army officer husband was stationed there. In India she became intrigued by the paradise gardens of the local palaces and pavilions. The result was her book Gardens of the Great Mughals published in 1913, the first on the subject and one which attracted wide interest and admiration in Britain.
