Women formed the backbone of Britain's effort to win the First World War, which contributed towards their eventual emancipation and the 1918 Representation of the People Act, which granted certain women the right to vote. A vast number of men were gobbled up by the country's war machine and women readily filled their roles; on the land, in the munitions factories, on the railways, in voluntary organisations and even on the front line.
