Talk: Jack of Newbury

Jack of Newbury (John Winchcombe) was producing cloth on an industrial scale in Newbury during Henry VIII’s reign, for export across Europe. This left him wealthy and allowed him to buy substantial property in the area. Jack was one of England’s leading clothiers and part of the Berkshire gentry, and led local men to war in the 1540s.
