WNO Orchestra - International Concert Series
Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture (Fingal's Cave) / Bruch Scottish Fantasy / Rachmaninov Symphony No 2
WNO’s Conductor Laureate, Carlo Rizzi, marks his return to the International Concert Series for the first time since 2008, with this exciting programme of late-Romantic masterpieces. Alexander Sitkovetsky joins us on the St David’s Hall stage for Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy. One of the world’s leading violinists, Alexander will be sure to awaken the scotch spirit in Bruch’s score, a four-movement fantasy based on Scottish folk-melodies, now amongst the composer’s most performed works. The second half features Rachmaninov’s ever-popular Symphony No 2. The work bears all the hallmarks of Rachmaninov’s skills as a composer – his gift for melody, his skill as an orchestrator, his mastery of form and structure, and his enduring commitment to the late-Romantic style, long after many of his peers had abandoned it for the more progressive compositional schools of the 20th Century.
