Dr Charles Gore from SOAS, University of London will present 'The Benin Empire: art and history'. The Kingdom of Benin was a pre-colonial state in what is now southern Nigeria. Its capital was Edo. It has been described as 'one of the oldest and most highly developed states in the coastal hinterland of West Africa, dating perhaps to the eleventh century CE'.
