Sophie Rennert, mezzo-soprano & Joseph Middleton, piano. Richard Strauss’s father was a horn player in the Munich opera, and the young Richard grew up surrounded by some of the greatest voices and composers of his era. This afternoon, Sophie Rennert and Joseph Middleton explore his emerging genius for melody and word-painting alongside the neglected but hauntingly beautiful songs of Strauss’s German contemporary (and sometime rival) Hans Pfitzner.
