BBC NOW: Stephen Hough plays Beethoven

Mahler's set of orchestral songs was the first of its kind. The listener is taken from the everyday pleasure of a smelling a flower to the midnight of the soul. The unfinished tenth symphony was a deeply cathartic work for the composer, helping him to come to terms with his broken marriage and impending death.
