In 1962 President Kennedy laid down a remarkable challenge to the Soviet Union stating that “..before this decade was out..” the United States would “..land a man on the Moon and return him safely to the Earth”. On 20th July 1969 this dream was realised when the Apollo 11 lander, Eagle, touched down in the Sea of Tranquillity.
