The story is based on the life of Joseph Merrick, who lived in the Victorian era and is known for the extreme deformity of his body. Born with a congenital disorder, Merrick uses his disfigurement to earn a living as the Elephant Man. In a traveling circus before it is discovered that his rough exterior hides a refined soul, which he used to teach the stodgy British upper class of the time a lesson about dignity. He soon becomes the toast of London and charms a caring actress before his death
