St John the Baptist Church open day
Heritage Open Day: Explore this 12th c. church with its Norman door and nave arches, as well as well preserved Anglo Saxon crosses. The interior contains important stained glass windows from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and a Roman memorial slab found in Rome. The church sits in an attractive location on the edge of Grimston Park. There has been a church here since Saxon times, but the present one dates from about 1160 - 1250. It was restored by Lord Londesborough, the patron, in 1861 and provided with two impressive east windows with stained glass by Capronnier of Brussels.
Lord Londesborough also fitted out other windows with glass from his collection including an Austrian window dating from 1420 that was recently described as 'being of international significance'.
