William Gilberd at The Colchester Bookshop
Heritage Open Day: Visitors will be able to learn about William Gilberd (1544-1603), who lived in the house, and try some of his experiments. Original open hall roof, dated to circa 1400. The building was the original hall range of a medieval merchant's house, possibly built for Thomas Stampe and later known as Tymperleys. It retains its original Queen post roof dating from circa 1400, a rarity in Essex. The building was remodelled circa 1790 as a suite of offices for the Francis family of
