Handel's Messiah, probably the best known and loved oratorio of all, was written in 1741 and first performed in Dublin. It was the sixth of his oratorios, a relatively new genre at the time, which he turned to following a run of opera composing. The text begins in Part I with prophecies by Isaiah and others, and moves to the annunciation of the nativity. In Part II, Handel concentrates on the Passion and ends with the Hallelujah chorus.
