The 'moriscos' of Spain: Christian or Islamic, Spaniards or ‘Moors’?
When Ferdinand and Isabella conquered Granada in 1492 they brought to an end nearly eight hundred years during which Islamic civilisation had flourished throughout the country. Ten years later they expelled all ‘Moors’ who refused to convert to Catholicism: hundreds of thousands decided to convert and they became known as ‘moriscos’. They lived in perpetual danger, despised by their Christian neighbours, persecuted by the Inquisition and exploited vindictively by the crown and by local nobles. I
