Letchworth Sinfonia New Year Concert
We are absolutely delighted to be returning to public music making, and have a wonderful programme for you!
You will instantly recognise the opening bars of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, one of the most famous pieces of classical music. It is thrilling to play, written at a turbulent time when Napolean's forces occupied Beethoven's home town of Vienna. And indeed the premiere of the work was also turbulent when the orchestra, under Beethoven's baton, had to stop and restart as they were so ill prepared.....Hopefully no such fate for us!
The second main piece in the programme is a gorgeous work by Dame Ethel Smyth, her Serenade in D. This significant piece of work, written in 1889 demonstrates a conspicuous debt to Beethoven. It was very popular in concert halls, but had slipped from the concert repertoire by the time she died in 1944. We are thrilled that her work is making a deserved comeback in terms of popularity.
The concert starts at 7.30pm.
Tickets can be bought online via our website www.letchworth-sinfonia.org.uk and are priced at £12 for adults, and £6 for under 16's.
To minimise the risks from COVID-19 we are asking audience members, like our string players, to wear masks, and minimise movement around the building.
