On the evening of Friday 5th September, at 7:30pm, Catherine Buchanan will talk all about “RAF Felixstowe – The People not the Planes” many readers will know that where the Felixstowe Docks are now very busy, previously used to be also the home of the “Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment” flying and testing Float Planes, and Flying Boats from 1913 to 1963.
They also worked with people over in Harwich… creating what became the Royal Navy Air Station (RNAS) Harwich.
Both sites therefore played a pivotal role in Britain’s early naval aviation history during the 1st World War. Much is known about the ‘planes… now Catherine will bring some of the personalities out of the shadows, and tell some of their stories.
Amongst those mentioned is Commander John Cyril Porte, innovator and designer of large Flying Boats, which were tested at The marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment - which is where todays huge Felixstowe Docks are located…
There are other people just as important.... but lost in the mists of time.
