Handel: Saul
Handel’s oratorio Saul was first performed on 16 January 1739. It tells the story of King Saul who is consumed by jealousy at the success of young David in the war against the Philistines and is eventually killed in battle along with his son, Jonathan.
Saul uses a large orchestra and contains some of Handel’s finest music, ranging from a triumphant ‘Hallelujah’ as the Israelites celebrate David’s victory over Goliath to a final moving elegy on Saul’s death
