Borrowdale and Derwent Water - Force Crag Mine Open Days 2020

Discover what they did with a grizzly, what's a jaw crusher and could you have carried the explosives box' Find out more quirky facts at this fascinating secret located in the stunning Coledale Valley, near Keswick. Missed by most people, the last mineral mine to be worked in the Lake District has been lovingly restored and cared for by volunteers. A guided tour allows you to explore the above-ground processing mill and associated remains - it's as if the miners had just left for the day.

Once a hive of industry, the mining of lead, zinc and barites took place at Force Crag for over 200 years, ceasing in 1990. History, engineering, geology, archaeology and an awesome setting, Force Crag Mine has it all. Booking Advisable. Phone: 017687 74649.
A National Trust Event - Start 10:30. End 15:00. Check Website for Admission Charges. Meet at Force Crag Mine at the head of the Coledale Valley (Grid Ref 198 216) or, meet at the Noble Knott car park (see below) for a lift via National Trust transport. Check website for latest information.
