Saturday 14th November
7:30-9:30pm (doors open at 6:30pm)
For the fourth event in this new series of chamber music concerts in the stunning surroundings of Southwark Cathedral, join cellist Chris Grist and pianist Daniel Grimwood for three beautiful works featuring the cello by three 20th century British composers. Frank Bridge's neglected work, written between 1913 and 1917 in the backdrop of the First World War, retains much of the tonal style present in his pre-War music but features unexpected mood changes than hint at the radical transformation his compositional style would undertake. By contrast, John Ireland's Sonata is a work that combines rugged power with poetic beauty, and was lauded by noted cellist Antoni Sala as 'the best cello sonata of modern times'. The final sonata in the programme by Welsh composer, Gareth Walters, is perhaps the most outwardly lyrical of the three whilst also possessing remarkable energy and spring-like freshness.
