Wells Art Contemporary
The much anticipated Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) 2021 exhibition is available to see in Wells Cathedral.
The show is bringing some of the best contemporary art from around the world - including a new work by Antony Gormley - to Somerset.
Out of 3,700 submissions, 91 artworks and 28 bespoke installations were selected, allowing the most cutting-edge art to interact with the 850-year-old architectural masterpiece.
All of the shortlisted works will be displayed in the much-anticipated WAC exhibition, returning to Wells Cathedral from Saturday 28 August to Sunday 26 September.
Brought to us by 87 artists, the shortlisted artworks are innovative and eclectic, spanning across all disciplines, media and subjects. They will be displayed inside and around Wells Cathedral, allowing the most contemporary work to enter in a dialogue with the 850-year-old architectural masterpiece.
Viewers can expect the unexpected. As they go from work to work, they will be invited to marvel at hyper-realistic paintings, pause in front of lush landscapes, laugh at satirical sculptures, get lost in colourful abstracts, reflect on thought-provoking pieces, and much more.
The exhibition will coincide with the installation of a brand-new piece by world-famous sculptor Antony Gormley, best known for his Angel of the North. Cast in iron and just over life-size, the work will be unveiled on the West Front of Wells Cathedral.
“Wells will become a must-visit destination for visual art lovers with both the WAC shortlist on display and the new Gormley work installed on the Cathedral’s West Front” says Paddy O’Hagan, Chair of WAC. “Great visual art is about starting conversations, pushing boundaries and provoking debate - and that’s what this collaboration with this great Gothic Cathedral has the potential to do.”
With the support of Arts Council England, the Wells Art Contemporary exhibition will be available:
• online from Monday 2 August
• at Wells Cathedral from Saturday 28 August to Sunday 26 September. The 91 artworks will be exhibited in the cloisters and the art installations throughout the Cathedral.
