'In a Monastery Garden' - Abingdon Abbey Buildings
Heritage Open Day: Visit the remaining domestic buildings of the medieval Abingdon Abbey. Explore the Monastery Herb Garden, to see herbs used by the monks for both medicinal and culinary purposes. Talk to the beekeeper about his bees and honey, a medieval wonder food. The Saxon Abbey of Abingdon was founded in the 7th century, sacked by the Danes in the 9th century, and re-dedicated as a Benedictine monastery in 953. It became one of the most cultured and wealthy monasteries of England and welcomed many royal visitors over the next 500 years. In 1536 the Abbey Church and most of the rest of the abbey was demolished by order of King Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
