Abingdon's Food and Drink History - Exhibition
Heritage Open Day: A photographic display to remind us of how we used to produce, buy and consume food and drink in the days before supermarkets, take-aways and the internet! Like other market towns, Abingdon has a long and varied history relating to food. We had a vineyard, numerous mills, and fishing. Brewing was a major feature - including in the former Abbey Buildings. And it is surprising how much of what we currently consider part of the town was farms and orchards only a hundred or so years ago.
More recently still, the pattern of shops in the town centre was very different - numerous butchers, greengrocers and bakers to choose from.
Then of course we have our unique tradition of bun-throwing.
Call in and see a fascinating range of pictures to illustrate all of this - and more.
The exhibition will be set in the wonderful surroundings of St Nicolas Church – and if you want to know more about the church’s history, join the Lost Abbey Walk on Sunday!
