White Rock Cottage and Ashcombe Gardens, Exmoor
Heritage Open Day: White Rock Cottage and Ashcombe Gardens, form a remarkable late Georgian garden landscape created by the Knight family in the 1820s. The cottage has now been restored, along with a Victorian school, and the Picturesque gardens are being re-awakened. White Rock Cottage and Ashcombe Gardens lie at the heart of a 16,000 acre Georgian estate high on Exmoor. The estate was created from uninhabited moorland by John Knight around 1820. He began a great mansion and a wild valley garden in the Picturesque style with White Rock Cottage, reminiscent of a Scottish croft, lying within the garden landscape. In March 2020 we completed a major project to conserve White Rock Cottage. Adjacent is the Victorian schoolroom which has also been conserved.
