All Saints Church
Heritage Open Day: All Saints in Weston-super-Mare is the product of a nation’s reawakened interest in pre-Reformation church architecture and sacramental devotion.
By the early 19th century the fabric of many English churches had reached a parlous state! Grade 2* listed building open for viewing.
Designed by Royal Academician George Bodley in 1898, the south aisle was added by his pupil, Francis Eden, in 1925. All Saints is a wide, triple gabled building with stately Decorated arcades, simple arched mouldings, and boarded wagon roofs that produce cathedral-like acoustic qualities. Bodley’s intended southwest tower never materialised, leaving this fine building somewhat hidden from view. John Betjeman described it as ‘the finest church of entirely modern foundation in Somerset’.
