The Passing of the Year
Jonathan Dove: The Passing of the Year
Johannes Brahms: Liebeslieder Waltzes
Jonathan Dove: Into Thy Hands
Wooburn Singers are delighted to welcome Stephen Jackson back as a guest conductor this term. We have a mixture of contemporary and romantic music for this concert in the annual Wooburn Festival.
The Passing of the Year is a song cycle for double chorus and piano. Jonathan Dove's writing for choral forces is charged with intensity and beauty. Written in 2000, it is dedicated to the memory of his mother and sets seven texts with a beguiling sense of the seasons passing. His a capella setting of Into Thy Hands is another gem.
The Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes, written in 1869, are a delightful collection of love songs, possibly inspired by his frustrated love for pianist and composer Clara Schumann. They were written early in his career to wide acclaim. Simon Howatt, our regular accompanist, is joined by Richard Carr for the required piano four hands.
