What better way to celebrate Christmas and the return of live music-making than with J S Bach’s joyful Christmas Oratorio?
Although nowadays the Christmas Oratorio is normally performed in a single evening, it was actually written as separate cantatas to be performed at six different services in Leipzig between Christmas Day and Epiphany, 6 January. Three of the parts use celebratory trumpets and drums, while Part 2, focusing on the birth of Jesus, has a more pastoral tone with its haunting
